The Lighthouse Tender ROSE was commissioned to the Lighthouse Service in August of 1916 to ferry supplies and personnel to and from US Lighthouses. She was acquired by the US Navy during both WW I and WWII. During the Great Fire of Bandon (Oregon), she stood in the Coquille River rescuing numerous residents and then assisted the Red Cross and Army relief efforts after the fire had destroyed the city. The ROSE was decommissioned in 1947, sold to private interests, and renamed NORTHERN EXPRESS.
